a)Initiative: Internships
The Employment Unit offers unpaid and paid internships to local graduating high school students and local college students in the summer and during the school year. There were 2 interns during this reporting period - one for summer 2008 in marketing, and one for spring 2009 in broadcasting. The internships are designed to assist the students in acquiring and developing skills necessary for employment in the broadcasting field.
b)Initiative: Outreach to Schools
1). Stations supported the Radio Tech Fair at Sussex Tech with on-air promos and a live broadcast, helping raise awareness of career opportunities in broadcasting. The Program Director serves on the communications board at Sussex Tech, and helps educate students on issues and careers in broadcasting.
2). Students from Delaware Technical and Community College spend required hours for credit in studio observation of our air talent. The employment unit had 4-6 students for mentoring and observation during this reporting period.
c)Initiative: Participation in Job Fair
On January 14, 2009, WOCQ participated at the Stephen Decatur Middle School job fair. The station had a table set-up and the Assistant Program Director, who has substantial responsibility in the making of hiring decisions, talked with students about career opportunities in broadcasting.
d)Initiative: Participation in Community Events
One male and one female radio personality from our Employment Unit participated in the Worcester County Health Department's Just 4 Boys program and Just 4 Girls program, held at the Berlin Intermediate School on February 25, 2009. The air personalities spoke with the attendees about staying in school, jobs (including opportunities in broadcasting), and involvement in the community.
